Election day matters for both time and eternity - choices have consequences.
The last few days before the November 6th 2012 election
have been…annoying. Each day in the mail there are multiple broadsides
either building-up or tearing-down candidates.
The phone rings and―thank God for caller I.D.―there is another political
message. Add to that TV and radio advertisements,
yard signs, bumper stickers and billboards and it is perfectly clear that election
day is upon us. And, after election day
we get whatever we get for our choices― all choices have consequences.
The Bible talks about elections too. The Apostle Paul writes, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has
blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ; for He
chose (elected) us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and
blameless in His sight… In Him we have redemption through His blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace that He
lavished on us in all wisdom and understanding….” (Eph. 1:3-4, 7-8).
Political elections last for a short season but receive an inordinate amount of attention, money and energy. God’s election last for eternity with consequences
of heaven or hell but one would hardly know it.
One of the most important spiritual election phrases is, “in Christ.” Imagine that phrase on posters, billboards,
mailings, etc. Would people choose
Christ? The Bible tells us the only way
sinful people can know holy God is to be found “in Christ” for it is there that one can find “redemption
through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, …hope…salvation…life…love...and peace” (Eph.
1-3).
The Bible says, “For
by grace you are saved by faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s
gift, not of works, so that no one can boast.
For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which
God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them” (Eph.
2:8-10).
November 6th 2012 Americans elect the 45th president of
the United States. Although an
historical event with great consequences – your election has greater
consequences. Are you “in Christ”? Have you personally experienced the God’s
love in the Lord Jesus Christ? Jesus
said, “Believe in God, believe in Me”
(John 14:1). Choose wisely my friend―your choice has a consequence.
